The SNOW may win but it is so darn nice outside that I don't mind. I'm still wrestling to scrape the snow off the roof. This is some really heavy snow and I am only half done as of the last day in January.
And to my son I am using a safety harness it is really slippery up there.
I took the week off because of the cold but before I came home last week I stopped at Woodland Improvements and picked up some 8/4 air dried ash to make a couple of tables. My brother Jim wanted a set for his daughter, we have made this style of tables before they are fast and fun. But it looks like the cold spell is over. It is the last day in January and I am heading up to continue with the SNOW JOB. I will let you know how that goes later.

Anybody that can take on such a big snow job will fit right in the political arena right now.
There is about 24 inches of snow on the roof and I have no tar paper on to protect the sheathing. It really bothered me all last night so here we are raking snow of the darn roof. In case you were wondering, no it is not fluffy at all it is one big block.

Inauguration day. It was in the low 20's and I put one fourth of the ceiling joist up and that was enough. Hey Anthony does it look OK to you.

In reply to the comment requesting photos of the sawyer, here are some photos of Jason Frank from last winter and this fall cutting the 2 x 12's for the rafters. The pine was harvested outside of Little Falls, Mn which is about 40 miles from here, and Jason Frank of Woodland Improvements is only 3 to 4 miles from our site. The intent was to use as much local product as possible.
It went above the single digits today and I headed up to the land. I needed to complete the last floor joist for the library / storage area. I must have left the hand brace out or dropped it in the snow last week when I was cleaning up because I cant find it any more, it sure was easier to mortise with it. Getting old is a treat. It will be getting up to the low 30s this week so keep checking back... I am onto the next step.

I went up knowing today will be the warmest day of the week, when I got up to the house it was 6 degrees and I was wondering if I might regret going up. After about 3o min. I warmed up . I finished two more floor joists and as you can see by the pictures the last mortis was the (mortis from hell) it took almost two hours to complete but I only have one more joist left to hang. I am not planning on going up the rest of the week as it is not going to be much above zero.

It is still very cold in the north land but I finished 2 more floor joists and it is starting to look pretty impressive. As you can probably tell I am still learning about blogging and mortising I got to tell you neither one is that darn easy oh well here it is.
My son wanted to see pictures of the mortise joints so here they are. I am hoping the effort will be worth it in the end. I only have 3 more joists to go! I am going to really learn to hate the angles that are necessary for a 20 sided house.

January 6th and it is beautiful out , ok it's only 20 degree's but that is a lot better than it has been. I arived at the land about nine and set up to cut the mortises for the library floor joists.
The floor joists are 4" X 6" brown ash, and I am mortising into white oak and ash. I have never done anything like this before and I have to say OAK is a realy tough wood. by 2:00 I had two of the sevin joists mortised, cut to length and installed.
